What Is a Dimensionalizer?
A dimensionalizer (also spelled dimensioner or cubing system) is an automated device that measures the length, width, and height of a package, parcel, or pallet — typically in under one second. The measured data is automatically passed to a WMS, TMS, or billing system for DIM weight calculation and labeling.
The terms dimensionalizer, dimensioner, and cubing system are used interchangeably across the industry.
How a Dimensionalizer Works
Most modern dimensionalizers use one of three sensor technologies:
- Laser triangulation: High-precision lasers measure distance to the package surface from multiple angles. Accuracy typically ±1–2mm.
- Time-of-flight (ToF) sensors: Infrared light pulses measure distance by calculating return time. Fast and cost-effective for standard parcels.
- Structured light / 3D imaging: Projects a light pattern and reads the deformation to reconstruct a 3D profile. Used for irregular shapes.
The system captures the bounding box of the object (minimum rectangular envelope), calculates volume, and passes dimensions and weight to downstream systems.
Key Specifications to Evaluate
| Specification | What to Look For |
|---|
| Measurement accuracy | ±2mm or better for billing compliance |
| Throughput | Matches your peak hourly parcel volume |
| Size range | Covers your min/max package dimensions |
| Integration | Native connectors for your WMS/TMS/ERP |
| Certification | NTEP/OIML certified for legal-for-trade billing |
| Barcode scanning | Integrated scan to auto-match dimensions to shipment ID |
Types of Dimensionalizers by Use Case
- Static (countertop/desktop): Package placed on a measurement platform. Best for induction points, receiving desks, or low-to-mid volume operations.
- In-motion (conveyor-mounted): Measures packages as they travel along a conveyor belt without stopping. Designed for high-throughput sortation lines.
- Drive-through (pallet): A forklift drives a pallet through a measurement frame. Captures full pallet dimensions and weight at dock doors.
When Should You Deploy a Dimensionalizer?
A dimensionalizer delivers clear ROI when:
- You are billing customers or carriers based on dimensional weight
- You process more than 200 packages per day and manual measurement creates bottlenecks
- You have recurring billing disputes related to dimension discrepancies
- You need to comply with IATA air cargo measurement standards
- You are integrating with a WMS or TMS and need automated data entry
